Science

The word “science” probably brings to mind many different pictures: a thick textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering through a telescope, equations scribbled on a chalkboard and bubbling beakers. All of these images reflect only some aspect of Science, but they do not provide the full picture. Science is a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the world around us.

The Science curriculum offers flexibility for teachers to tailor their teaching in ways that provide rigorous, relevant and engaging learning and assessment opportunities for our diverse range of students. Science teachers will use the variety of learning opportunities, experiences, natural environments and people resources in your local community to make student learning real and meaningful to their life and society.

Australian Curriculum: Science

All Northern Territory schools now implement the Australian Curriculum: Science. This curriculum:

• Provides students with an opportunity to develop an interest in Science by expanding their curiosity and willingness to explore ask questions and speculate about the world in which they live.
• Provides opportunities to understand the nature of scientific inquiry and the ability to use a range of scientific inquiry methods.
• Develops students’ abilities to communicate scientific understandings and findings to a range of audiences, justifying their ideas and participating in scientific arguments and claims.
• Builds a solid knowledge foundation of the biological, chemical, physical, and earth and space sciences and to use that scientific knowledge and methods needed to explain and predict phenomena.

Throughout 2014, a dedicated Science teacher is teaching Science to students from Years 1 to Year 6. A Science room has been set up and housed in the demountable. The teacher will use a variety of hands on materials and resources to provide a balanced and meaningful whole school program using the Australian Academy of Science Primary Connections program to provide consistency.
